Day 5: Humility in COPING
What’s your attitude when faced with responsibilities, complications, or difficulties? A survey “Stress in America: January 2021 Stress Snapshot” from the American Psychological Association (APA) reported that 84% of adults surveyed felt at least one emotion associated with prolonged stress in the prior two weeks. The most common were feelings of anxiety (47%), sadness (44%), and anger (39%).
Coping is specific efforts that people use to deal with and attempt to overcome stress and adversity.
Many of us learn how to deal with adversity and stress in different ways. The Happiness Test measures your ability to deal with stress effectively. My test shared that exercising, meditation, and laughter are examples of methods that can help cope more effectively. Other coping strategies usually include:
- Sleep enough
- Eat healthily and exercise regularly
- Give yourself a break and take a break from what’s causing stress
- Recognize the need for help
The above list of strategies allowed me to reflect on how I learned to cope over the years. Only one approach from the above coping strategy list, “recognize the need for help," leads us to humble ourselves before God. Shifting our attitudes to recognizing our need for help uncovers the attitude of humility we need for a lasting peace that can only come from God.
An attitude of humility through the peace of God brings the power to cope.
